Privacy Policy

Overview

HeroJournal is a desktop application designed with privacy as a core principle. Your data stays on your device, and we do not collect, transmit, or store any of your personal information or achievement data.

Data Storage

All data you enter into HeroJournal is stored locally on your computer:

  • macOS/Linux: ~/.config/HeroJournal/
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\HeroJournal\

This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to export or backup your data.

What We Don't Collect

HeroJournal does not collect:

  • Personal information (name, email, etc.)
  • Your achievements, notes, or any content you create
  • Usage analytics or telemetry
  • Device identifiers or system information
  • Location data
  • Any other data from your device

AI Features (Pro)

If you use the optional AI-powered features in HeroJournal Pro, your data is sent directly to the AI provider you configure (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Ollama, or OpenRouter).

  • You provide your own API keys, which are encrypted and stored locally
  • Data is sent directly from your device to the AI provider
  • We do not route, intercept, or store any AI requests or responses
  • Please review your chosen AI provider's privacy policy for their data handling practices

Git Sync (Optional)

If you choose to use the Git sync feature, your data is synced to a Git repository of your choosing. This is entirely optional and under your control. We do not have access to your Git credentials or repository.

Updates

HeroJournal checks for updates from updates.herojournal.app. This check only retrieves version information and does not transmit any personal data or usage information.

Third-Party Services

HeroJournal does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. The only external connections are those you explicitly configure (AI providers, Git repositories).

Your Rights

Since all your data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control over it. You can:

  • Export your data at any time using the built-in export features
  • Delete your data by removing the HeroJournal data folder
  • Backup your data using the backup feature or by copying the data folder

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date.
